The dachshund originates from Germany, where centuries ago they were bred for use in badger hunting. Dach is the German word for badger - hence the name Dachshund. The dachshund is an excellent hunting dog. It has strong, short legs so it can easily dig out prey from burrows in the ground. Today it is still used for hunting, but it is also a friendly family dog.
The sausage dog, as it is also called, is characterized by a long spine in addition to the short legs. This means that this active dog has a great strain on their spine because their legs are not so good at absorbing shocks.
